High Risk Lighting for Secure Environments
Discover specialist high risk lighting engineered for the toughest environments, offering maximum durability, safety, and compliance for low, medium and high risk secure services

Engineered for protection and performance
NHS England commissions adult secure mental health services for those detained under the Mental Health Act. The secure services provide treatment for adults (aged 18 and over) with mental disorders including mental illness (MI), personality disorder (PD) and neurodevelopment disorders (NDD) including learning disabilities (LD) and autism (ASD).
Patients are liable to be detained under the Mental Health Act and their risk of harm to others and risk of escape from hospital cannot be managed safely within other mental health settings.
The secure services work in partnership with other organisations including the Ministry of Justice, Courts, Police, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) and other social care agencies. Patients typically have complex chronic mental disorders, which are linked to offending or seriously harmful behaviour. Some will be involved with the criminal justice system (CJS), courts and prison, and may have Ministry of Justice (MoJ) restrictions imposed.
Our high-risk lighting is engineered for low, medium and high risk secure services where safety and resilience are critical. Built to withstand impact, tampering and harsh conditions, each luminaire ensures dependable performance and compliance in secure and challenging settings.
Why high-risk lighting is different
High-risk environments demand lighting that performs under pressure; safeguarding people while withstanding the challenges of secure spaces. At Light Years Ahead, we design and manufacture luminaires specifically for settings where safety, security and durability are non-negotiable. From mental healthcare wards to custodial facilities and high-traffic public areas, our products are trusted where reliability matters most.
In these environments, lighting must:
Resist deliberate impact and vandalism
Minimise potential for tampering or concealment
Withstand exposure to moisture, dust and cleaning processes
Support the wellbeing of those who use the space
Remain functional and secure over long periods of heavy use
