BS 8887-221:2024 – A New Standard for Luminaire Remanufacture
BS 8887-221:2024 is a new code of practice, providing a structured process for the remanufacture of luminaires as part of the broader MADE (Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly and End-of-life processing) approach.
This standard applies to all types of luminaires – whether LED, fluorescent, halogen or otherwise – and focuses specifically on remanufacture. It does not cover routine maintenance or use in hazardous or explosive environments. It can be applied to both on-site and off-site remanufacturing, helping support circular economy goals.
How the Process Works
Every project starts with an individual ID for each type of luminaire being remanufactured, ensuring full traceability.
A Preliminary Assessment is carried out to check feasibility – looking at factors like light output, condition, and original specification (including IP/IK ratings). This determines the basis of the Scope of Works. We request samples, but if luminaires can’t be removed, we’ll carry out a detailed on-site survey with measurements and photos.
The Scope of Works sets out the redesign requirements, testing needs, and which components can be reused. We follow Design for Remanufacture (DfRem) principles, prioritising reuse wherever materials remain safe, functional, and compliant with current standards. Once the scope is approved by all parties, we begin the remanufacturing process.
Components that can’t be reused are recycled responsibly in line with WEEE and RoHS regulations. All remanufactured luminaires undergo full electrical safety testing, in accordance with BS EN 60598-1:2021.
We can also provide TM65 and TM66 reporting to show the environmental impact and embodied carbon of the remanufactured product.
Each remanufactured luminaire comes with a full warranty, and extended cover is available if the design includes long-life components. We maintain detailed technical records for 10 years, covering specifications, traceability, compliance, user instructions, labelling, and where applicable – environmental data.
