Our anti-ligature luminaires are purpose-built to reduce the risk of self-harm or tampering, offering peace of mind for clinical teams and estates professionals. Every anti-ligature product in our range is developed in line with leading mental health design guidelines and rigorously tested to resist ligature formation. This includes consideration of cord diameter, pressure and common anchor points to ensure luminaires offer smooth, tapered profiles with no exposed fasteners or fixtures.
We support our clients with risk-level classification and installation guidance to help ensure the right solution is selected for each space and level of observation. Our quality standards are supported by ISO 9001:2015 ISO 14001:2015 certifications and products adhere to BS EN 60598.
Engineered for real-world resilience
Every luminaire we produce is rigorously tested at our UK facility to meet (and often exceed!) recognised performance standards across ligature resistance, impact protection and ingress protection.
Anti-Ligature
Our products are assessed using defined weights, cords and angles to simulate ligature risks, following best-practice guidance. We test both design and construction, ensuring fittings can withstand persistent tampering while minimising anchor potential.
Impact Resistance (IK Rating)
IK ratings classify a product’s ability to withstand mechanical impact. Many of our luminaires are tested beyond the standard IK11 level (50 joules), up to 250 joules where applicable, giving specifiers added confidence for high-risk areas.
Ingress Protection (IP Rating)
We offer fittings from IP20 to IP66, with appropriate sealing for bathrooms, external spaces and environments exposed to moisture, dust or cleaning procedures. All IP ratings are verified to international standards.

Light Years Ahead’s custodial lighting range is designed, manufactured and independently tested in close consultation with the Ministry of Justice.
